I walked over to Quaxo and extended my hand. Quaxo turned his gaze at Haru and gave her a curious smile. Haru giggled and said, "Nice to meet you." "Toto actually." said Toto glaring down at Muta. Quaxo, this is Baron, Haru, and Birdbrain" said Muta smirking at the birdbrain part. He looked pretty confident and isn't bad-looking either. Quaxo was a black and white tuxedo cat, with a glittery jacket on. "ease come in," said Muta moving out of the way letting the stranger come in. "It is nice to see you again, Renaldo Moon." Muta who was closer to the entrance walked to the twin doors and opened them. My ear twitches at someone knocking on the door.Įveryone in the room looks at the door with curiosity. That’s why I can't pursue her.I can't.it wouldn't be fair for the both of us. As much as I adore and care for Haru, I can't be with her or give her the love she deserves, without Louise popping into my mind. Louise has been dead for several years, but I still for some reason can't move on. Haru, I can't shake away the feeling that if I pursued her, that I would be betraying the one that I gave my heart to long ago. I sighed at that memory and turned my direction to the picture hanging from the wall of my long-lost fiancée, Louise.Īs much as I admired Ms. "Baron.Just for the record.I think I might have a little crush on you." I always need to remind myself that she isn't a heavenly being that fell from the sky and that she is indeed human and very much real. Haru grows more and more lovely each day. She has become an honorary member of the Cat Bureau, without her even knowing it. Muta and Toto also fancy her and we have become an inseparable group. In this past year, I have grown fond of her. Haru for a long time, but it seems like she’s always been here and like we have always known her. She has more confidence and expresses herself more like she would like to. She's matured suddenly in this past year. I returned my attention to the brunette again as she talked with Muta and Toto. I'm beginning to think that people have forgotten about us. We've only had a few clients since Haru, and it's been a year since then. With the power of the bureau, she is able to transform into a cat and shrink down to our size, so she can feel more comfortable around us. It’s unclear whether further volumes will follow, but even on its own Baron: The Cat Returns is a must-buy.I smiled at Haru, as she was smiling and laughing at what Toto had just said to her.
Like all the best children’s stories, this funny and creepy fairy tale won’t just appeal to children. The drawing, layout, and pacing all work, and Haru’s dramatic escape from the land of cats on a ladder of birds is particularly exquisite.

Unlike these other titles, which are made up of movie stills, Baron was meant to be read in comic form. Baron is part of Viz’s Studio Ghibli library, which includes manga adaptations of popular Studio Ghibli anime. Fans of anime may recognize this manga as the inspiration for the Studio Ghibli anime The Cat Returns. Haru’s adventure leads her into the land of cats and reunites her with a beloved former pet, but Haru must learn to let go of her old friend if she’s to escape turning into a cat forever.Įverything about Baron is stellar: art, storytelling, and translation. The king of cats wants to reward Haru for her kindness, but the cats’ idea of thanks (in addition to the cases of cat food that mysteriously appear at her house) is to make her the prince’s bride! Only the mysterious Baron, a toy cat come to life, can rescue her from her overly enthusiastic new friends. In Baron: The Cat Returns, an ordinary schoolgirl discovers that cats really do come from their own world when she rescues a feline prince from an oncoming truck. Racing around as if chased by an invisible enemy, attacking pieces of lint– we’ll never understand why they do the things they do. As any cat lover will tell you, felines operate under their own logic.
